Report a stolen bike on politie.nlIf your bike is stolen, there are two things you can do: go to the police station to report the crime, or do it online. However, at the police station, you may be helped in English, but to report a crime online, you must speak Dutch. Even if you manage to let Google Chrome translate the page to English, you still need to write your report in Dutch. On this page, we tried to create a tool to help you with this.
N.B. Since recently, the police requires you to login with your DigID to report your crime online.
A stolen bike is not the only crime you can report online, but there are a lot of restrictions to crimes that can be reported online (burglary for example can only be reported at a police station), and many crimes are much too diverse to handle them all. To keep this tool simple, and to encourage you to report your stolen bike (the no. 1 crime currently hardly to be reported), we focussed only on stolen bikes with this tool.
Go to this website (opens in a new window), and on that page, click on via het aangifteformulier op internet. It opens a popup with some questions to determine if reporting online is actually possible. For example, in these situations you can't report your stolen bike online:
- If violence [towards a person] was used to steal the goods
- If the culprit is known (if you saw the thief in action, for example)
In these cases you still need to go to the police station.
Four options appear to determine if it is actually possible to report this crime online. They are as follow:
Has violence been used against you or somebody else or are you physically hurt? Ja=Yes; Nee=No
Has the culprit been seen?
Are there traces of the culprit found? Such as blood traces or finger prints
Has the crime happened in a residence? Such as your home or another house
Answer the questions and click Start aangifte. If you clicked "Ja" to any of these questions, you are now redirected to a page telling you that you cannot file this crime online and you will have to visit a police station. If you answered "Nee" to all these questions, you will be taken to a page where you need to login using DigID (No DigID yet?). Once you logged in, you are taken to the next page.
A form appears where you can enter your story. You only need to tell what happened; details about location, your bike, etc. can be given later. You can use Google Translate (as it needs to be in Dutch, and the more details you can give, the better), or if you're OK with a standard story, you can use our text generator below:

Toen ik terug kwam, zag ik

Kort daarop vertelde iemand mijdat mijn fiets weg was. Ik heb niet zelf gezien wie mijn fiets wegnam. Ik heb aan niemand de toestemming gegeven om mijn fiets weg te nemen.

There's a checkbox on the bottom of the page. By checking this box, you declare that you have read the following passage:
Article 188 Criminal Code: He/she, who does a declaration of a committed offense, knowing that it is not really committed, shall be punished by imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine of the third category. (€ 7800,-).
In other words, you declare that you understand that falsely reporting a crime is punishable by law.
Check this checkbox. You may now, if you so desire, print a copy of your declaration by clicking Print. If you're satisfied with what you see, click Akkoord. You are now done. A copy will be sent to your e-mail and/or, if you chose this option, by post within a few days.
